Critical Illness Insurance

What is critical illness insurance?

Critical illness insurance makes sure you’re covered for the unexpected heart attack, stroke, or other health condition. Primary insurance only covers so much, the critical illness supplemental plan makes sure there are no gaps in your payment for care services.

In 2019, 1.6 million new critical illness policies were purchased.

What does critical illness insurance cover?

Each critical illness policy differs in what illnesses they cover, but most will fall within these three categories: Cancer, Heart Conditions, and Organ Damage. Some health plans will offer the “Organ Damage” category as “other”.

This includes medical conditions like:

  • Blindness

  • Deafness

  • Paralysis

  • ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)

  • Lupus

  • Tetanus

  • Malaria

  • Sickle-cell anemia

  • Cystic fibrosis

  • Severe burns

  • Coma

What isn’t covered by critical illness insurance?

Critical illness insurance will not pay if your condition isn’t serious. Common chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes are not covered under this policy. Most companies have a very narrow and specific list of conditions that are covered by this policy, and others.

How much is this going to cost me?

A healthy individual paying for a $10,000 benefit, can expect to pay about $10 monthly. A meal from Chipotle once a month in exchange for $10,000 in your pocket when you need it the most. Not a bad trade, huh?
